Don’t miss the Centre-Val de Loire region’s must-see early music event! Inspired by the exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci, Master of Water”, the 21st edition of the festival features programmes centred on this theme.
Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September / 8:30pm
Les Arts Florissants, conducted by Paul Agnew, return to the Clos Lucé with Claudio Monteverdi’s Sixth Book of Madrigals, composed in 1614 in Venice, a city shaped by water. Situated at the crossroads between Renaissance polyphonic practices and the earliest dramatic intuitions that heralded opera, this book brings together pieces that explore the human condition. It includes, notably, the Lamento d’Arianna, the only surviving fragment of the opera Monteverdi wrote for the 1608 festivities at the Mantuan court.
Sunday 27 September / 3:30pm
Ensemble Clément Janequin, conducted by Dominique Visse, offers a second programme based on two major works from the late 16th century, embodying another form of secular creativity: Adriano Banchieri’s Barca di Venetia per Padova and Orazio Vecchi’s L’Amfiparnaso. Barca di Venetia per Padova depicts the boat journey of a series of characters from Venice to Padua, blending vernacular language with polyphonic art.
L’Amfiparnaso is a madrigal comedy conceived as a “sound theatre.” Though not a fully staged work, it brings together vivid vocal scenes blending amorous laments, picturesque genre scenes, and playful moments, seeking to “charm through ridicule” and to unite the seriousness of polyphony with the expressive freedom of popular song.
